NOTE THE LEADERS OF THIS WALK

2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Monterey Gardens: Start at the northwest corner of Poplar and Oakwood avenues. The neighbourhood is recommended for designation as a “Local Significant Heritage Area” by the City of Sault Ste. Marie. Monterey Gardens is a well preserved neighbourhood built between 1941 and 1947 as part of the federal Wartime Housing Ltd. program. Across Canada, over 26,000 homes were built to house families of wartime workers, families of military personnel and returning veterans. These homes were built from plans based on a single design and were compact and affordable. Often referred to as Strawberry Box homes, the bungalow design homes were eventually administered by the CMHC and they proved to be durable and conducive to the formation of closely knit neighbourhoods. Faye Smedley grew up in Monterey Gardens and will share her experiences. Michael Burtch and Sean Meades will conduct the walk.
